Home Fire Safety Checks

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are committed to the reduction of accidental dwelling fires, as well as deaths and injuries that result from these fires. By identifying the potential for fires in the home, we can effectively prevent many avoidable fires from occurring. The Home Fire Safety Check (HFSC) can be considered a form of fire fighting, “extinguishing” fires before they start.

On completion of the HFSC request form (on line or by telephone) a member of your local Area Risk Team will contact you (normally by telephone), to arrange an appropriate appointment. Please be aware we do prioritise the visits based on circumstances.

Open Spaces Review

Stratford-on-Avon District Council has begun a review of open space, sport and recreation provision across the district. The aim is to ensure that local communities have access to facilities and services that meet their sporting, leisure and recreational needs, both now and in the future. The review will cover a wide range of open spaces, from parks and gardens, to outdoor sports, children’s play areas and allotments.

The questionnaire is available online at - http://www.stratford.gov.uk/survey/open_spaces/_open_space__sport_and_recreation_questionnaire.htm.

One of the most important elements of the review is to understand what local communities think about existing open space and sports provision in the local area and how it could be improved. This information will be inputted directly into the review and will influence the findings and outcome of the project.

If you have any questions about the review, please do not hesitate to contact Miriam Owen at Stratford District Council on 01789 260332 or email miriam.owen@stratford-dc.gov.uk

Village Drainage Work

Work to repair and improve the village drains will begin week commencing 17th May. A completely new highway drainage system will be installed from opposite St Joseph Church down to just behind the bus stop. There will be six new gully's connected to the new pipe and two sections of pipe will be replaced a little further up the hill. The existing old stone culvert will be left in place as a secondary system There is also a little more jetting and drain survey work to do at the bottom of the hill on the double bend to make sure that separate part of the system is working properly.

The work should take about three weeks to complete, but will depend on weather and what utilities are encountered. There should not be much disruption as most of the work will be just within the verge or at the very edge of the road.

Bell ringing

On 1st May the bells of St John the Baptist were given a thorough workout when bellringers from all over the country arrived in Avon Dassett to ring the newly restored bells. Graham Nabb from Kineton and his friends and engineering contacts have been working tirelessly and voluntarily on the bells for almost a year. This has been made possible by the completion of a huge amount of work by the CCT to repair and restore the spire over a long period. In addition their builders have just completed more work by re-roofing the south side of the chancel.

May Day Bell Ringing At St John the Baptist

May Day 2010 provided a rare opportunity for those keen on Church Bell ringing to practice their art in 25 Warwickshire churches and raise money for the restoration work carried out on the bells at St. John the Baptist Avon Dassett.

Some 150 Bell Ringers, some from Warwickshire and others from all corners of the Country met to ring together travelling from Church to Church to ring and 'collect;' the bell Tower adding it to their personal total. Some had rung in Thousands of different churches, some of the youngsters just a few. The magnet for this gathering was the first ringing at St Johns for thirty years making a ring there a prize catch for the avid collector!.

Two of the youngsters, Harvey Innocent (11) from Offchurch and Becki Hawkins (13) from Kineton navigated their driver around 21 different towers and rang is all of them!

Today there are more than 40,000 change-ringers in the British Isles and smaller numbers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Southern Africa and the USA. They are young and old, men and women, short and tall, girls and boys, non-musical and musical, church-goers and non-churchgoers. They come from all walks of life, but they share a fascinating hobby and a commitment to their team.

Proposal for Parking Lay-by at Lower End- UPDATE

In Avon Dassett's Parish Plan published in March 2008 one of the action Points for the Parish Council to consider was ‘...a lay-by on the playground side of the road for Lower End residents’. It was felt that the provision of a parking lay-by at this site would remove the obstacle of parked cars on the approach to this sharp bend, increase visibility , ensure that cars were travelling on the correct side of the road when entering the bend from the B4100 direction and reduce the potential for accidents.

The proposal was sent to Stratford District Council in October 2009 with a request that it be considered as an area funded roads / transport project. Unfortunately the scheme was not one of those awarded funding and on 2nd March we received this feedback:

‘The above proposed scheme was considered by Stratford Area Committee at the Stratford Area Transport Capital Seminar on Friday 26th February 2010. After discussion and consideration unfortunately this scheme was not chosen for implementation. Resources are limited and schemes were prioritised in order of merit and importance. After a bad winter extra funding was especially made available for carriageway repairs and emergency drainage schemes’

Avon Dassett Parish Website

The Avon Dassett Parish website (http://www.avondassett-pc.gov.uk) continues to go from strength to strength. The site is attracting hundreds of new and returning visitors each week from across the world. On March 12th we will be representing parish websites throughout Warwickshire in a digital inclusion event at the Heritage Motor Centre.

Recent updates to the website have embraced web 2.0 technology. We have a Flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/984114@N22/) where people can upload photos of Avon Dassett and the surrounding area. The images are then fed directly onto our homepage. We have created an interactive google map of the village (http://www.avondassett-pc.gov.uk/find.cfm) We also have an RSS feed which shows the ten most recently updated pages. Go to our site and the RSS logo should appear on the menu bar of your browser.

The website contains a wealth of information about the village including a monthly diary, information on groups and people, a comprehensive history of village with documents to download, planning information, and minutes and agendas of the parish council. We are always happy to include more content on the website. Please contact Jill Burgess (jburgess22@tiscali.co.uk) or Sarah Richardson (sarah.richardson@warwick.ac.uk) for more information.

Affordable Housing

Little Compton affordable housing
Little Compton Affordable Housing

The Avon Dassett Housing Needs Survey completed in June 2007 identified a need for 3 new affordable homes for local people. The homes needed are 2-bedroom houses to rent from a housing association. The Parish Council want to explore the level of support there is in the village for a development of 3 new affordable homes for local people. The Housing Needs Survey indicated a certain degree of support, only 41% of households returned their survey

The Parish Council carried out a further survey in June. The results of this survey were counted and verified at the Parish Council meeting on Monday 7th July. The results are as follows:

  • Votes for a development of 3 affordable homes = 47
  • Votes against = 22
  • Spoilt papers = 1
  • 70 returns out of 100 surveys delivered

Two landowners came forward to offer pieces of land for housing. However, for a variety of reasons both plots proved unsuitable. However, a landowner has now come forward with a third piece of land for proposed development. This is now being evaluated by Warwickshire County Council and Stratford District Council. Please contact us if you have any comments or suggestions.
